How To Repair Stucco
Friday, October 9th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedEven though stucco has a very durable surface, it can sometimes crack or become prematurely damaged if it was initially applied to the wall improperly. In order to minimize the damage and keep it from getting worse, as soon as you notice cracks or gouges it is important to repair stucco immediately. These cracks can allow moisture to seep through and cause further damage to the mesh wire or wall beneath the stucco finish.
Minor cracks in the surface can be repaired by filling them in with stucco caulk. Small holes can be patched up with a stucco patching compound. A thin layer of patching compound can make a large area of damage appear adequately restored, but to truly achieve a flawless repair, you need to use stucco material.
It can sometimes be difficult to find stucco material to blend in seamlessly with the undamaged area and perfectly match an older stucco finish. It can be an option to break down the area surrounding the damage, fill it in with new stucco, and apply a new coat of paint over both old and new stucco.
Use a chisel to chip away the area around the damage, breaking stucco at an angle so that there will be a lip around the hole that will hold the new material. Thoroughly remove all dust and debris from the hole you’ve created. Fill it in with the new material. Allow it to set and dry completely before painting over the new surface.
Keep in mind that the stucco material will set fast in higher temperatures; therefore, professionals suggest that cool-weather days are the best time to work with stucco. Of course, before you begin you need to be certain you have everything you will need.
If you encounter lengthy cracks that run vertically from the base of the wall or any other major damage too large to be patched with stucco repair material, more serious problems like damage to the mesh wire (which runs inside the stucco layers or foundation) could be to blame. In order to repair stucco in these serious situations, you will likely need the services of a professional – the stucco walls themselves may be in need of a complete overhaul.
