Scented candles are wonderful gifts for any occasion and/or season, especially when made by your own hands.
1. Choose Your Candle Fragrance
Fragrance oil is available in most craft shops. You can also look for it on the internet. Select a good quality fragrance oil instead of going whth a cheap water or alcohol based fragrances. Your wax mix will be oil based, so your fragrance should also be oil based. Why? Well, as oil and water do not blend, the water from a water based perfume tends not to mix with the melted wax.
2. Choose Your Wax
The basics of making scented candles are more or less the same as for ordinary wax candles. Start by choosing your desired kind of wax. Available in the market is a versatile range of wax beginning with naturals from beeswax, palm or soy and moving along to paraffin or gel wax. It is important that you decide on the fragrance intensity for your candles before picking the kind of wax. For instance, wax with less density holds less fragrance than higher density wax.
3. The Act of Making Scented Style Candles
Let’s cover the method for making aromatic candles.
1st step is to melt your wax. I suggest using a double boiler. That means put the wax in a small pot. Now place that container into a slightly larger pot partially filled with water. You may now heat the water. Use a thermometer to avoid burning your wax. Maintain the temperature at a constant 170-180 degrees F.
When the wax is melted, put a wick in the mold & take the wax from the heat source. Now add the fragrance oil that you have chosen. A mixture of 1 ounce of fragrance oil to 1 pound of wax will create a fragrance level equal to 6% of candle density. Be aware that greater amounts of fragrance will cause the candle to burn out sooner owing to higher liquid density of the candle.
Now pour your melted wax/fragrance mix into it’s mold. The only job left is to let the whole thing cool before removing your candle from it’s mold.
Congratulations on a job well done!
4. Experiment as You Go Along
Start experimenting and you will soon become an expert in all aspects of making candles. By using different fragrances and colors, you will perfect the art of candle making and thoroughly enjoy the process.
It’s a great feeling to gift your loved ones with a scented candle that is homemade knowing that they will find the fragrance both relaxing and invigorating.
