It can be difficult to vacuum and dust a house when it becomes too cluttered because all your time is spent on trying to go through the clutter and not in actual cleaning. One is usually too tired to keep cleaning after all the time is spent on clearing away the clutter. But the good news is there are things you can do to control and organize clutter BEFORE it becomes overwhelming.
Stacks of paper are the most common thing that clutters people’s homes. Some of the stacks of paper could include piles of children’s homework, newspapers, work papers, and the mail is usually piled up too. There are some helpful tips on what you can do to organize yourself so you won’t have lots of stacks of papers all around the house.
What do you do with the mail. Throw away the junk mail immediately each day when the mail comes and then go through it right away so it doesn’t pile up. The junk mail gets thrown in the trash before going back into the house for some people. Next create a “to do” file and put your bills that need to be paid in the file. Some people create a space near the phone or computer desk to put a basket for all their to do papers or they have a drawer in the desk to put them in file folders. Then with the other papers you feel are important to keep you need to file them away right then and there and not wait for later. It seems that later never comes around and then you have clutter.
If you need to bring home work papers then you can use to same principle as mail with those papers. File all your “to do’s” in one spot (not on the counter) and file away your important papers.
To easily dispose of your newspaper you can place a bin next to your trash can under your kitchen counter. After you read the paper then all you ahve to do is put it in the right bin. Then at the same time you can take out the garbage and the recyclable newspaper bins.
Sometimes parents get caught up in keeping every little paper their child brings home from school. Then you could have large piles of schoolwork cluttering up the house. It is a challenging to try to get rid of the clutter when you want to keep all your child’s school papers for a memory book.A solution to this problem is to buy a box or container and keep it in a cabinet or closet close by. Then you can go through the paperwork and decide which to keep and place them in the box instead of in a pile. Instead of storing the large artwork and science projects you could take pictures of them and then throw them away. You can keep a larger box or bin under a bed or in the basement or attic where you can periodically remove the papers from the closet nearby into its’ permanent storage box. This way you can organize clutter and still keep those precious memories that you and your child can look through and remember one day.
Organizing clutter is more than going through piles of papers because there are items that clutter also and when it comes to those things you need to ask if it is something that you are going to use again and again?Brutal honesty is required.A good rule to follow is the one year rule which means that you throw out items you have not used in at least a year! You can also sell or give away all the items that you haven’t used in a long while and items you don’t need any longer. Sometimes one holds onto to objects not knowing if they will use it in the future but you should just store those for six months and then get rid of them if you haven’t used or needed them.
For your seasonal items purchase some large storage containers that can be stacked on top of each other and put them in an attic, basement, or garage. Always mark you storage containers well so that you will know what is in each one. No one needs the aggravation of having to search though every box to find the decorations they want. Mark each container so you will know what is in each storage bin and will be able to find it easily at a later date. Remember if you see that their are stained, broken, or damaged items put them in the trash.
It may take some time to organize clutter around your house at first, but once you have set up a system and routine it will so easy to keep up the things that come into your home. Relax now and enjoy your clutter-free home!
