If you are not the type that enjoys sitting in the direct sun then a patio umbrella may be what you need. Sitting outdoors on the patio can be a relaxing experience, whether reading or trying to take a nap, but it can quickly become uncomfortable if the sun is shining on a warm summer day. Protecting your skin from the sun can help prevent a bas case of sunburn as well as the development of melanoma. The little shade provided by a patio umbrella can make it more enjoyable to sit outside.
Whether you use a market umbrella or an 11 or 12-foot patio umbrella is irrelevant, as long as it covers the table through which it is attached. Umbrella stands will help provide stability when the patio umbrella is used with a table as well as when it is free-standing in the yard between a couple of chairs. Umbrella stands are heavy by design to help hold the umbrella upright, but if the umbrella is too large for the stand, it will probably tip over in the slightest of breezes.
The stands are used to keep patio umbrellas in an upright position, especially when opened, but also keep them upright when collapsed. Making sure the umbrella is secure will not only protect the investment in the umbrella and table, but will alos protect user from injury.
While many people buy an outdoor furniture set without an umbrella, some will buy a patio umbrella before they buy a complete set of furniture. A small umbrella help up with a stand can provide the little bit of shade to keep them cool in the summer. Additionally, a small market umbrella can be folded and taken to the beach to provide shade by sticking the stem directly into the sand. This eliminates the need to lug the heavy umbrella base around when you go swimming.
Patio umbrellas are usually made of canvas, which is water resistant, with the stem made of wood or aluminum. The size and shape of the umbrellas also vary with many of the stems made to tilt to help keep the late afternoon sun off of those seated at the table. Wood also offers a classier design than those made of plain or brushed aluminum and can be found to match the wood of the rest of the outdoor furniture.
When a person buys outdoor furniture in a prepackaged set, the table and chairs will all match in color and style and most manufacturers include patio umbrellas as part of the package. However, if the umbrellas in not included, matching patio umbrellas are usually available, if not from the retailer, then directly from the manufacturer. It is always best to buy them at the same time so then entire set ages at the same rate.
