Variable Speed Pool Pumps – The Future of Swimming Pools
By choosing the proper pump, Swimming pool owners can expect savings of at least $400/year.
Only the energy-concerned owners of swimming pools truly realize the high energy consumption of their own swimming pool. In fact, it’s probably one of the most electricity consuming appliances they have in their home. That’s because most pool and spa pumps use very energy efficient single stage motors that run at 1HP and up. With electricity supply in abundance, and energy conservation a low priority – this has been the industry standard for years.
So how in-efficient is my pool pump? A recent study found that to run California’s 1.2 million swimming pools consumes roughly the same output as one nuclear power or two conventional energy plants (study by Davis Energy Group for Pacific Gas & Electric – 2004). Imagine the energy consumption of ALL the swimming pools across the United States, and how this much impact our power conservation efforts. Arizona too has an incredible abundance of private swimming pools per home, which is why Arizona pool builders are switching to these incredible new pumps.
The solution? Pumps working smarter, not harder.
In the past few years, swimming pool pumps and motors have been part of a huge electricity-saving improvement effort. The most improved energy savings come from the introduction of the new digitally controlled, variable drive swimming pool pumps. By using permanent magnetic motors, these new swimming pool pumps have been designed to use less electricity. The standard induction motors used in swimming pools actually use more than 30% more energy than the new permanent magnetic motors. As the pool operator programs this pump to work at the minimum required capacity for each pool task (heating, cleaning, filtration, waterfalls, etc.) energy reduction can be as much as 90%!
By using a pool and spa pump at its minimum speed required to complete a task, it will drastically reduce the energy consumed (simply because it requires less energy to push water slowly than quickly). Did you know? On a typical pool and spa task, if a pump can reduce the speed by 1/2, then the energy will be reduced to 1/8. These new swimming pool pumps enable the pool owner to set the pump speed and flow to perform pool tasks with the minimal energy required.
Energy Savings of $620 to $1,350
According to Pentair Water Pool and Spa, their IntelliFlo® and IntelliPro™ variable drive pumps routinely reduce energy use up to 90%, depending on the models and circumstances for average savings of $620 to $1,350 annually. Because the cost to replace your old pump is about equal to what you will save (based on swimming pool usage over 1 to 2 years), many swimming pool owners are having their old pumps replaced.
Energy delivery charges are even higher in Arizona, and with Phoenix’s huge swimming pool count, this new pool pump has become an absolute necessity for pool companies in Phoenix when building swimming pools. California’s revolution to eco-friendly products makes owning an electricity efficient swimming pool pump even more necessary.
Specific Examples of how IntelliFlo Pentair pumps can be integrated in your swimming pool:
This swimming pool pump can be used for an built-in cleaner system booster pump, and it’s set at 2900 Rev’s per minute, which is equivalent to a two HP pump. The same pool pump can be dialed down to a 1/2 horsepower pool pump to circulate & clean the water of the pool. With a simple press of a button (and some pool remote automation), this same pump can be used for spa boosters in both a slow AND faster speed mode!) Another great use is the ability to control the volume of a fountain or pool water feature (it is also known to be used by high end residential Phoenix landscape companies to manage the sound & flow of custom landscape waterfalls & ponds). The IntelliFlo Pentair pump can be set for variable speeds - giving you a low speed waterfall for a quiet evening outside, or you can ramp the speed higher for MAX PRESSURE for a backyard party!
